When my nephew was very young he was given a Yellow Lab puppy as a birthday gift from a well meaning relative. Unfortunately, at that time he suffered from severe asthma which was exacerbated by pet allergens. It was so serious and debilitating, his mother, my older sister, had to give his puppy to our younger sister. That was a very sad day. Today there is new hope for people suffering from pet allergies.
The results of a study done in Europe signal great news for pet lovers everywhere. The study was published in the Oxford Journals, and I warn you, it is a little creepy. Apparently, lab workers that handled test animals, like rats and guinea pigs, developed all sorts of nasty animal related allergies resulting in asthma, rhinitis, and conjunctivitis. The goal of the study was to find ways to reduce allergens caused from these animals, thus relieving the symptoms of lab workers. They were successful and discovered the following:
Floor cleaning has been carried out by dry sweeping or by using a portable vacuum cleaner To minimize the spread of allergens, floors were first cleaned using a central vacuum system Following the vacuuming, the floors were damp mopped Symptoms caused by the pet allergens were significantly reduced in the test participants
After following the procedure above the conclusion was vacuuming with a central vacuum system, followed by damp mopping greatly reduced the spread of pet allergens. Again, this is ground breaking news for pet owners or want to be pet owners afflicted by pet allergies.
Central vacuum systems are really not too difficult to install and they can be retrofitted into most homes. If you, or anyone in your family suffers from pet allergies, find a reputable company, either In your local market, or online, that offers free consultations, and ask what it would take for you to install a system in your home. Then, go buy a puppy.
