Dry air can damage not only your health but also the furniture in your home. Air that has a low amount of humidity can cause asthma, allergies and rashes. Wooden furniture can dry out and crack. Luckily, if you live in an area which has low humidity you can purchase a machine called a humidifier which will return the humidity to more normal levels.
Humidifiers come in all sorts of different sizes and types including ones for the whole house and portable models. There are generally two types of ways a humidifier can operate – cold stream and warm stream. Warm mist humidifiers use a warm stream of water to put the moisture back into the air.
Cold mist humidifiers on the other hand use a cold stream of water. Cold humidifiers are just as effective as those that use a warm stream but can keep the room cooler. There is also no need to worry about the machine becoming too hot or burning yourself when you touch it.
Any humidifier that you buy will require you to buy a replacement filter from time to time. The exact time will depend on the actual unit. If you don’t replace the filter then bugs and other bacteria will start to breed in the water.
Some of these machines not only replace the moisture in the air but can also remove particles and dust mites. This makes them ideal for people who suffer allergies or asthma.
You can buy humidifiers in retail shops, department stores and hardware retailers. The best known brands include Honeywell, Holmes and Bemis. When looking to buy a machine you will need to know which size you need. Whole house models range into the thousands but will effectively work in an entire house. A small model can work in an area of 700 square feet. Larger industrial models can go as high as 2,550 square feet. Portable models are ideal for a medium sized room.
In conclusion, people who live in an environment which is low in humidity should investigate using a humidifier to avoid health problems and damage to wooden furniture. You will need to choose between two types – cold and warm stream – and will need to know the size of the area that you want to use the model in. You can find humidifiers at home improvement stores and department stores. Larger whole-house models will require you to hire a professional to install it.
